Lectionary Year B (2005-06) Unit 7: Easter 5--Pentecost Sunday
This unit covers the fifth Sunday of Easter-Pentecost Sunday in Lectionary Year B. It is designed to help students understand sacrificial love and the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
Lesson 1: The Source- Being in the vine. The only way to live for Christ is by being connected to Him. In the same way that a branch draws its life from the vine, we draw our life and spiritual strength by remaining in Christ. (Acts 8:26-40; Psalm 22:25-31; 1 John 4:7-21; John 15:1-8)
Lesson 2: Lay It Down- Chosen for the greatest love. Christ calls us first to receive God's love, and then to be full of His love, to give our lives in love for our brothers and sisters, and for the world. What does it mean to lay down my life for my brothers and sisters? How do you love like that in everyday life? (Acts 10:44-48; Psalm 98; 1 John 5:1-6; John 15:9-17)
Lesson 3: The Word and the World- In the world but not of the world. Jesus does not pray that we would be brought out of the world; instead He sends us out into the world. Understanding that the world is not safe, He prays for our protection. What does it mean to be sent out into the world but not be overcome by its evil? How can we be made pure by the teaching of the words of truth? (Acts 1:15-17, 21-26; Psalm 1; 1 John 5:9-13; John 17:6-19)
Lesson 4: Can These Bones Live?- The work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has been sent to us to be our present Counselor, encourager, and comforter in the world. Have I received the present help that Jesus sent for us when He returned to heaven? What is the work of the Spirit in our daily lives? (Ezekiel 37:1-14; Psalm 104:24-34, 35b; Romans 8:22-27; John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15)
