This unit covers the Eighth through the Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost in Lectionary Year A. During this unit students will understand that God is at work, His mercy is not dependent upon our circumstance, we have a responsibility to live what we believe, and that we must answer the call to lose our lives and take up our cross and follow Him.

Lesson 1: Times of Trouble-- In Genesis, Joseph's own family betrays him into slavery. In Matthew, the disciples face a storm. In this lesson students will learn that in the midst of these troubling times, God is at work, though He can't always be seen. If He has the power to calm the storm, He has the power to save us (Genesis 37:1-4, 12-28; Psalm 105:1-6, 16-22, 45b; Psalm 85:8-13; Romans 10:5-15; Matthew 14:22-33).

Lesson 2: See God in Your Picture!--The interaction between Jesus and a non-Jewish woman reminds us that God's mercy is not dependent upon our circumstance or religious status. In this lesson students will learn that sometimes we need to be able to see God in the picture of our lives, and believe that He is willing to act on our behalf (Genesis 45:1-15; Psalm 133; Psalm 67; Romans 11:1-2a, 29-32; Matthew 15:10-28).

Lesson 3: Living Sacrifices--In this lesson students will learn that when we identify and confess our belief in Jesus, there is a responsibility to live in that belief. Peter s confession led to being given the keys to the kingdom. Paul describes the responsibility of our belief as the offering of our bodies for service, and allowing God to transform us (Exodus 1:8-:10; Psalm 124; Psalm 138; Romans 12:1-8; Matthew 16:13-20).

Lesson 4: An Encounter with God--Moses life was transformed when he encountered God in the burning bush. In this lesson students will learn that an encounter with the Living God leads to hearing His call--we respond with surrendered obedience. Christ calls us to lose our life and take up our cross and follow Him.
